Top 10 Christmas Songs 2018

Tis the season to be jolly and joyful. With sugar plums dancing in our heads, there is no better way to set the Christmas spirit alive than listening to some good old Christmas music.

We are presenting our ‘favorites of favorites’ because as we all know, there are just too many great songs to mention; thus, we gladly give you our shortlist. Who knows, maybe you’ll hear something new on this list! And as always, why don’t we use this opportunity to learn some new vocabulary in the lyrics! Oh yeah- hold that excitement!

Number 10:

You’re a mean one, Mr. Grinch

Let’s go ahead and get the pessimistic parts of Christmas out of the way.  This character in Dr. Seuss’ 1967 Film, How the Grinch stole Christmas, has earned its way to the top of Christmas antagonists, rivaling old Scrooge.  It is even common in phrases like stop being such a grinch  or he’s really grinchy.  Moreover, everyone who’s seen the original is almost certain to associate it with the rich baritone of Thurl Ravenscroft.  So, let us listen and enjoy this tune while ridding ourselves of all things “grinchy”  before Christmas approaches!

The Grinch at his best:

Lyrics:

You’re a mean one, Mr. Grinch
You really are a heel
You’re as cuddly as a cactus, you’re as charming as an eel, Mr. Grinch
You’re a bad banana with a greasy black peel!

You’re a monster, Mr. Grinch
Your heart’s an empty hole
Your brain is full of spiders, you’ve got garlic in your soul, Mr. Grinch
I wouldn’t touch you with a thirty-nine-and-a-half foot pole!

You’re a vile one, Mr. Grinch
You have termites in your smile
You have all the tender sweetness of a seasick crocodile, Mr. Grinch
Given a choice between the two of you I’d take the seasick crocodile!

You’re a foul one, Mr. Grinch
You’re a nasty-wasty skunk
Your heart is full of unwashed socks, your soul is full of gunk, Mr. Grinch
The three words that best describe you are as follows, and I quote
“Stink, stank, stunk!”

You’re a rotter, Mr. Grinch
You’re the king of sinful sots
Your heart’s a dead tomato splotched with moldy purple spots, Mr. Grinch
Your soul is an appalling dump heap overflowing with the most disgraceful
Assortment of deplorable rubbish imaginable, mangled up in tangled up knots!

You nauseate me, Mr. Grinch
With a nauseous super “naus”!
You’re a crooked dirty jockey and you drive a crooked hoss, Mr. Grinch
You’re a three decker sauerkraut and toadstool sandwich with arsenic sauce!

Number 9:

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas

What would Christmas be like with the exclusion of Sinatra? Dull.  Being a familiar classic to everyone’s ears, the song has been performed by many, but Frank is our fav of the lot.  His voice is so distinguishable- cool, calm, and collected.  Our hats off to you Frank! Have yourself a merry little Christmas high above!

Ol’ Blue Eyes doing what he does:

Lyrics:

Have yourself a merry little Christmas
Let your heart be light
From now on, our troubles will be out of sight

Have yourself a merry little Christmas
Make the yule-tide gay
From now on, our troubles will be miles away

Here were are as in olden days
Happy golden days of yore
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more

Through the years we all will be together
If the fates allow
Hang a shining star upon the highest bough
And have yourself a merry little Christmas now

Number 8:

White Christmas

White Christmas is of course a classic many artists have performed with their own flavor.  Our favorite flavor is the Drifters’ 1956 version, mixing a beautiful choir and a splash of rhythm and blues – R&B. It’s main rival, Bing Crosby’s version, is also great, but we’ve picked the Drifters’ because of its uplifting swinging spirit; the spirit only Christmas deserves!

Let’s ‘Drift’ away to a White Christmas in 2018:

Lyrics:

I’m dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
Where those treetops glisten, and children listen
To hear sleigh bells in the snow, the snow

Then, I-I-I am dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write
May your days, may your days, may your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be whiteI-I-I am dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
Where the treetops glisten, and children listen
To hear sleigh bells in the snow

I-I-I am dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write
May your days, may your days, may your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be white

Number 7:

What Child is this?

What child is this? Well, this is a song obviously based on the nativity of Jesus.  This tune might be less known throughout Croatia.  Interestingly enough, the actual music is from a very old English folk song called Greensleeves; a song believed to be composed for Henry VIII in the 16th century.  What captures our attention to the tune is the beautiful minor progression.  It’s one of those pieces which are both happy and sad simultaneously.  Additionally, we love Bing Crosby, and since we didn’t put him on the list for his White Christmas, What Child of this makes it up!  The lyrics present one of the most commonly confused pair of verbs, lay vs. lie (irregular form).  We will discuss the difference, but for now, enjoy the music!

What child is this? Well, that’s a no brainer!

Lyrics:

What child is this who laid to rest
On Mary’s lap is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet
While the good shepherds watch are keeping

This, this is Christ the King
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing
Haste, haste to bring Him laud
The babe and the son of Mary, of Mary, of Mary

So bring Him incense, gold, and myrrh
Come peasant, king to own Him
The King of Kings salvation brings
Let loving hearts enthrone Him

This, this is Christ the King
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing
Haste, haste to bring Him laud
The babe, the son of Mary

Number 6:

Soulful Christmas

The Godfather of Soul has landed.  We decided to kick it up a notch and put some pep in our step.  We need not explain what energy James Brown can bring to the party, but maybe we are not so familiar with his Christmas Album.  It certainly doesn’t differ from any other soulful funk we’d expect from such a musical funked up madman! From the chopping guitar grooves to the sweet staccato of Maceo Parker‘s alto, we dare you to stay still during this tune. If you succeed, someone might need to check your pulse!

Get up off that thang with the Godfather, James Brown:

Lyrics:

I ain’t talkin’ just to tease
People like you, you don’t grow on dreams
Look at you, that’s what it’s gonna be
Have everything I need
Around my soul book Christmas tree

Merry Christmas, happy New Year
I love you, have good cheer
I love you, good God

Got my baby, my precious love
Happiness, good God, I got plenty of
Would you believe I got peace of mind
And I’ll be groovin’ at Christmas time

Merry Christmas, happy New Year
May you have a good cheer
I love you, James Brown love you
Your luck is so and so, missin’ you
Brother love

Soulful Christmas like a sweet melody
I’m a lucky you so and so
The bells gonna ring for me

Merry Christmas and a happy New Year
To all of my fans, have a good cheer
I love you, I love you, won’t take nobody else
I can’t stand myself, huh, good God

I got a heart full of love for the whole wide world
And a little special love, my little soulful girl
I got this feelin’ every, every night and then
Gotta get ready, bring the New Year in

Merry Christmas and a happy New Year
All good cheer, there’s one more thing
You’ve been so nice to me down through the years
And I’ll always remember you, well, I’ll never forget

You bought my records, come to see my show
That’s why James Brown love you so
You come to see my show
That’s a debt that I’ll always owe

Come to see my show, see you at Christmas
Come to see my show, see my show

Number 5:

Last Christmas

Up to know, we’ve mostly covered older tunes, so why not proceed to the 80s.  Wham’s Last Christmas is certainly an example of a new(er) age masterpiece.  Others have tried emulating emotion from this tune like Taylor Swift’s abomination, but nothing holds a candle to the original. With the passing of our beloved, George Michael, we thought it only  appropriate to include this fine tune on the list. RIP Mr. Michael and Merry Christmas from below!

Have a Whamming Christmas:

Lyrics:

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I’ll give it to someone special

Once bitten and twice shy
I keep my distance
But you still catch my eye
Tell me, baby
Do you recognize me?
Well, it’s been a year
It doesn’t surprise me

(Merry Christmas!) I wrapped it up and sent it
With a note saying, “I love you, ” I meant it
Now, I know what a fool I’ve been
But if you kissed me now
I know you’d fool me again

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I’ll give it to someone special

A crowded room, friends with tired eyes
I’m hiding from you, and your soul of ice
My god, I thought you were someone to rely on
Me? I guess I was a shoulder to cry on

A face on a lover with a fire in his heart
A man under cover but you tore me apart
Now, I’ve found a real love you’ll never fool me again

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I’ll give it to someone special

A face on a lover with a fire in his heart
A man under cover but you tore him apart
Maybe next year I’ll give it to someone
I’ll give it to someone special

Number 4:

Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree

Brenda Lee’s Rockin Around the Christmas Tree deserves a spot at number 4 on the list.  This song is Home Alone, over and over again.  These two have become quite synonymous; it is quite difficult to hear or see one without thinking about the other.  As far as the tune, it’s basically a classic swing piece that should get the toes a tappin’ and the hips a movin’! Best enjoyed with a big glass of eggnog!

Christmas with a Rockin’ Tree:

Lyrics:

Rockin’ around the Christmas tree
At the Christmas party hop,
Mistletoe hung where you can see,
Every couple tries to stop,
Rockin’ around the Christmas tree,
Let the Christmas spirit ring,
Later we’ll have some pumpkin pie,
And we’ll do some caroling.

You will get a sentimental feeling when you hear,
Voices singing, “Let’s be jolly,
Deck the halls with boughs of holly”,
Rockin’ around the Christmas tree,
Have a happy holiday,
Everyone dancin’ merrily,
In the new old-fashioned way.

Number 3:

Run Rudolph Run

Coming in at number 3, Mr. Chuck Berry’s Run Rudolph Run.  Chuck is such an important figure in music history and this song exemplifies his art at its best.  From legendary riffs and double stops on guitar to his fun and Johnny B. Goode like lyrics, this song is sure to get the party started.  Grammatically, there are great examples of present perfect simple and continuous. Enjoy a legendary tune and learn some grammar – what more could you ask for?

Chuck giving us a very ‘Berry’ Christmas!

Lyrics:

Out of all the reindeers you know you’re the mastermind
Run, run Rudolph, Randalph ain’t too far behind
Run, run Rudolph, Santa’s got to make it to town
Santa make him hurry, tell him he can take the freeway down
Run, run Rudolph ’cause I’m reelin’ like a merry-go-round

Said Santa to a boy child what have you been longing for?
All I want for Christmas is a rock and roll electric guitar
And then away went Rudolph a whizzing like a shooting star

Run, run Rudolph, Santa’s got to make it to town
Santa make him hurry, tell him he can take the freeway down
Santa make him hurry, tell him he can take the freeway down
Run, run Rudolph ’cause I’m reelin’ like a merry-go-round[/vc_column_text]

Run, run Rudolph, Santa’s got to make it to town
Santa make him hurry, tell him he can take the freeway down
Santa make him hurry, tell him he can take the freeway down
Run, run Rudolph ’cause I’m reelin’ like a merry-go-round

Said Santa to a girl child what would please you most to get?
A little baby doll that can cry, sleep, drink and wet
And then away went Rudolph a whizzing like a Saber jet
Run, run Rudolph, Santa’s got to make it to town
Santa make him hurry, tell him he can take the freeway down
Run, run Rudolph ’cause I’m reelin’ like a merry-go-round

Number 2:

The Christmas Song

Nat King Cole is indisputably one of the greatest jazz vocalists and pianists in the 20th century, according to Jamey at The American Center.   Cole, who had accomplished so many things, not only in music but with racial segregation in America, bestowed us his greatest Christmas gift ever. With his voice being  “Unforgettable” and his smile simply intoxicating, The Christmas Song demonstrates both qualities at their finest.  You’ll be able to smell the chestnuts roasting as soon as you push the play button! We guarantee!

Chestnuts roasting, the smell of Christmas!

Lyrics:

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire
Jack Frost nipping at your nose
Yuletide carols being sung by a choir
And folks dressed up like Eskimos

Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe
Help to make the season bright
Tiny tots, with their eyes all aglow
Will find it hard to sleep tonight

They know that Santa’s on his way
He’s loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh
And every mother’s child is gonna spy
To see if reindeer really know how to fly

And so I’m offering this simple phrase
To kids from one to ninety-two
Although it’s been said many times, many ways
Merry Christmas to you

And so I’m offering this simple phrase
To kids from one to ninety-two
Although it’s been said many times, many ways
Merry Christmas to you

Number 1:

Santa Claus is back in Town

‘The King’ has made number 1 on our list! What would Christmas be like without “Elvis Claus” coming to town in his big black Cadallic.   This tune is destined to get you jumping and jiving until your stockings are tired and worn!  Being a bluesy and rockin’ n rollin’ piece of Christmas, we’d think it safe to say that the King has rightfully deserved his place at our number ! for 2018. Pazi! Santa Claus is coming!

The King just doing his thing:

Lyrics:

Well, it’s Christmas time, pretty baby
And the snow is fallin’ on the ground
(Christmas, Christmas)

Well, it’s Christmas time, pretty baby
And the snow is on the ground (Christmas, Christmas)

Well, you be a real good little girl
Santa Claus is back in town (Christmas, Christmas)

Got no sleigh with reindeer, no sack on my back
You’re gonna see me comin’ in a big black Cadillac

Whoa, oh, it’s Christmas time, pretty baby
And the snow is fallin’ on the ground
Well, you be a real good little baby
Santa Claus is back in town (Christmas, Christmas)

Hang up your pretty stockings
Turn off the light
Santa Claus is comin’ down your chimney tonight

Whoa, oh, oh, oh, it’s Christmas time, baby
And the snow is fallin’ on the ground

Well, you be a real good little baby
Santa Claus is back in town (Christmas, Christmas, Christmas)

Honorable mentions:

Because Christmas wouldn’t be the same without these!
